Trail users in the Comox Valley are being urged to stay alert after reports of sharp metal spikes being found on local cycling routes and nearby roads. Comox Valley Search and Rescue says it has received reports of hazardous metal devices being placed along popular bike trails in the region. The organization has also been advised that similar objects may have been spotted on roads in the Lake Trail area. The discovery has raised concerns among outdoor recreation groups, with fears the spikes could cause serious injuries to cyclists, hikers, dog walkers and horseback riders. According to search and rescue volunteers, the objects appear to have been positioned in locations where trail users may have little time or space to react. A cyclist who strikes one of the spikes could suffer a flat tire or lose control, while pedestrians and animals could also be at risk of injury. “Please use extra caution when riding, walking or driving in the area,” Comox Valley Search and Rescue said in a public safety advisory posted to social media. The group is encouraging people to pay close attention to trail and road surfaces, particularly around corners, narrow sections and shoulder areas where hazards may be more difficult to avoid. The warning comes as trails across the Comox Valley continue to see heavy use from mountain bikers, runners, hikers and families enjoying the region’s extensive outdoor recreation network. The search and rescue organization is asking anyone who encounters suspicious devices on trails or roadways to be cautious and report them and share the warning with others who may be using the area’s trail systems.
