k.d. lang headed to the Canadian music industry hall of fame

Country singer-songwriter k.d. lang is newest inductee to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

The Edmonton-native has amassed an impressive collection of awards during her 25-year career, including four Grammy awards, nine JUNO awards and an Order of Canada.

Lang caused a stir in the world of country music when she came out as a lesbian and she’s also taken a stance against the cattle-ranching industry.

In a statement, Lang said she was honoured about induction.

“To be included in the lineage of Canadian artists who have formed my musical DNA and who remain my mentors, is beyond humbling,” she said.

Lang will be honoured at this year’s JUNO Awards, taking place on Sunday, April 21 in Regina.

The 51-year-old launched her career in music with the 1984 indie album A Truly Western Experience, for which she garner the JUNO awards for most promising female vocalist of the year.

After sparking Nashville’s attention, lang made her U.S. debut with the album Angel With a Lariat in 1987, and followed that up in 1988 with Shadowland.

The 1999 album, Absolute Torch and Twang, won lang her first Grammy Award and earned her more mainstream recognition.

Lang will join the ranks of Canadian music icons including Anne Murray, Daniel Lanois, Hank Snow, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Shania Twain and Blue Rodeo in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
