Major snow storm set to hit parts of Saskatchewan, up to 50 cm in the northwest

Canada’s weather service now says a spring storm moving across the province on Thursday could dump up to 50 centimetres of snow in parts of Saskatchewan.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), the storm is expected to impact western and northern parts of the province beginning Wednesday and lasting into the weekend.

Areas under the special weather statement include Moose Jaw, Yorkton, Eston, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, and surrounding areas.

In an update just after 3:30 p.m., Prince Albert and Saskatoon were placed under a snowfall warning. Between Prince Albert and upward, Environment Canada says mixed precipitation will change to heavy snow Wednesday evening. Some freezing rain or ice pellets may cause slippery conditions, according to the weather agency.

There will also be a risk of thunderstorms in the southern regions and a risk of freezing rain in east-central regions.

Environment Canada says the storm will be a “prolonged snowfall event,” with snow expected to taper off Friday into a light snow.

“Prepare for disruptions to transportation, services and utilities,” the warning said.

“Keep roofs clear to avoid the danger of heavy snow loads. Take frequent breaks and avoid strain when clearing snow.”
