2 polar bears shot after attack in northern Manitoba town of Churchill

CHURCHILL, Man. -- A man and a woman are in stable condition after a polar bear attack in northern Manitoba.

RCMP say a 69-year-old man who stepped outside his home in Churchill during the night to investigate a commotion was attacked and suffered lacerations.

A 30-year-old woman -- one of three pedestrians who had been confronted by the bear -- was also injured.

Mounties say the big bruin was only scared away when a vehicle drove toward it.

Manitoba Conservation tracked the animal and, in the process, shot and killed two bears.
