The 15th annual Citizens Walkabout in Lethbridge took place Friday morning. The walk brings together self-advocates, families, disability organizations and community leaders to walk in solidarity from city hall to Galt Gardens. The event was focused on highlighting equality, inclusion and disability rights in southern Alberta. Despite recent cuts and changes made by the provincial government, organizers say the walk is a way for voices to be heard. “It means that people are still concerned, and they still celebrate the fact that we still have a place in our communities,” said Rene Plaizier, Inclusion Lethbridge executive director. “So, people are noticing that changes are happening that are not in the best interest of people with disabilities, and I think that’s a big part of it, but also there’s an element of celebration that no matter what, people are here and they’re willing to use their voices.” Following the walk, a range of activities and speeches took place at Galt Gardens.
