A 24-year-old man has been charged with multiple offences after he allegedly attacked a woman, threatened a security guard with a knife and set a fire in an apartment building Friday night. According to Winnipeg police, officers responded to a report of an armed and barricaded incident inside of an apartment building in the 600 block of Sherbrook Street. Investigators learned at approximately 10:15 p.m., an on-site security guard was approached by a woman who said she was assaulted by a family member inside of a suite and asked for help getting her property. When the guard attended the suite, a man inside allegedly held a knife to his throat and threatened to kill him. The guard managed to escape the suite and called 911, while the armed suspect remained barricaded inside. While police officers responded to the scene, the suspect allegedly set a fire inside the suite, with the building filling with smoke. Members of the tactical service team were able to enter the suite and remove the suspect, who dropped the knife. While out in the hallway, police allege the accused was combative and said a “use of force” encounter took place. The suspect was then handcuffed and removed from the building. He was treated for minor injuries in hospital. Police said roughly two dozen tenants of the building were evacuated due to the smoke and fire, and no injuries were reported. One officer was assessed for smoke inhalation but did not require hospitalization. The original victim declined medical attention, police said. A 24-year-old man has been charged with several offences including arson with disregard for human life, assault with a weapon, assault and resisting a peace officer. He was detained in custody. None of the charges have been proven in court.
