A transport truck crossed the centre median and drove for “several hundred metres” in the wrong lane after the driver fell asleep on Highway 416 in Ottawa’s south end, according to police. Ontario Provincial Police received reports of a tractor trailer driver driving northbound in the southbound lanes on Highway 416, near Bankfield Road, shortly before 4:30 a.m. Monday. “The driver had fallen asleep while travelling northbound, crossed the centre median and continued driving northbound in the southbound lanes for several hundred metres until coming to a stop,” OPP Const. Michael Fathi told CTV News Ottawa. The southbound lanes of Hwy. 416 were closed while police conducted an investigation. Fathi said the driver was not hurt. The driver of the transport truck has been charged with Careless Driving, which includes a $490 fine and six demerit points.
