A young woman with a stroller had to dive out of the way after a 24-year-old Owen Sound man allegedly drove onto the sidewalk nearly hitting her and several other pedestrians. Police say he was out on bail, facing numerous charges, and had to wear a GPS ankle monitor, one of several court-ordered conditions he was under. Owen Sound police say at around 4:50 p.m. on Sunday, officers tried to arrest the man after finding him driving a pick-up truck and breaching multiple conditions, but he resisted. While escaping the officers who were trying to arrest him, the man struck the police cruiser, nearly hitting the officers, and sped away, according to police. He then blasted onto the sidewalk, where he allegedly almost hit several pedestrians, who were forced to dodge the oncoming truck to avoid being hit. There were no injuries. Police say they received notification that the GPS monitor was no longer around the man’s ankle and that it had been purposely taken off and thrown away. Officers found the man’s vehicle not long after, but it was empty. The dangerous spree was not over yet. Police say he then attempted to break into someone’s home. The Owen Sound Police Service, along with help from the OPP, K9 and aviation, managed to find the man not long after and arrest him. He is facing numerous charges. Due to his high risk to public safety, the accused has been referred to a special prosecutor team that handles high-risk and repeat offenders.
