Calgary Tower recognizes a half-century of Crime Stoppers

The Calgary Tower recognized 50 years of Crime Stoppers Friday

Calgary is one of the cities around the world recognizing 50 years of the Crime Stoppers movement.

The Calgary Tower was lit up in red and blue Friday night in recognition of Crime Stoppers.

The anonymous tip line was launched in 1976 by New Mexico detective Greg MacAleese and has grown into one of the world’s most trusted public-safety initiatives.

Calgary Crime Stoppers launched in 1982.

Since then, the local non-profit organization has received more than 130,000 tips, solved 15,000 cases and approved $2 million in rewards.

That has resulted in 12,700 charges and recovered $363 million worth of property and drugs, according to the organization.
