The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was kept occupied on Tuesday morning, responding to a pair of blazes in separate areas of the city. The first fire broke out around 5:10 a.m. in Winnipeg’s downtown area. When crews arrived at the apartment building, located in the 300 block of Qu’Appelle Avenue, they found heavy smoke coming from the structure. Firefighters then launched an interior attack and declared the fire under control by 6:10 a.m. Some residents got out of the building on their own, while firefighters helped others to evacuate. No one was hurt. The city’s emergency social services team also came to the scene to help displaced residents. The second fire began just before 6 a.m. in the city’s North End at a high-rise apartment building in the 100 block of Powers Street. Crews found a fire in one of the suites, launched an interior attack and quickly extinguished the flames. Some residents evacuated the building, while others sheltered in place in their suites. No one was injured. Both fires are under investigation and damage estimates are unavailable.
