S&P/TSX composite up more than 100 points, U.S. stock markets also climb higher

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was up more than 100 points in late-morning trading, helped by strength in the base metal and energy sectors, while U.S. stock markets also climbed higher.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 130.34 points at 34,208.10.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 44.59 points at 49,653.75. The S&P 500 index was up 17.65 points at 7,416.58, while the Nasdaq composite was up 39.97 points at 26,287.05.

The Canadian dollar traded for 73.16 cents US compared with 73.07 cents US on Friday.

The June crude oil contract was up US$2.13 at US$97.55 per barrel.

The June gold contract was up US$7.40 at US$4,738.10 an ounce.
