Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Timmins, with severe thunderstorm watches also in effect in Greater Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie and North Bay. “Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing heavy rain,” the weather forecaster said June 30. “A cluster of thunderstorms is affecting the area. Local rainfall amounts exceeding 50 mm are likely. Heavy rain may cause flash flooding and significant reductions to visibility. Fast-moving and rapidly rising water can sweep vehicles away and damage infrastructure.” Wind gusts up to 100 km/h The thunderstorm watch warns of winds gusting up to 110 km/h, large hail and heavy rain. The watches are in effect now until this evening. “Risk of tornadoes,” Environment Canada said. “Several rounds of thunderstorms are expected today bringing strong winds, hail and heavy rain. Local utility outages are possible. Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is possible. Fast-moving and rapidly rising water can sweep vehicles away and damage infrastructure.” Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms capable of producing damaging hail, wind or rain.
