Canadian Blood Services is encouraging new and returning donors to book blood and plasma donation appointments before and after Canada Day, saying hospitals continue to rely on a steady supply despite the holiday and busy summer season. The organization said donors of all blood types are needed throughout July to help met ongoing patient demand. Many donor centres and mobile donation events will remain open on Canada Day. Canadian Blood Services said the summer months have also brought an increase in appointment cancellations, urging donors who cannot attend to cancel in advance so their appointment can be offered to someone else and to rebook as soon as possible. The organization said only about two per cent of eligible Canadians currently donate blood or plasma, even as demand continues to grow. According to Canadian Blood Services, a recent survey found 46 per cent of Canadians believe donating blood or plasma is a uniquely Canadian act of generosity, while 71 per cent said it is one of the most meaningful ways people can give back to their communities. The organization said maintaining stable blood supply is essential to support patients requiring transfusions for surgeries, cancer treatments, trauma care and other medical needs.
