A new retailer is moving into Place d’Orléans in Ottawa’s east end, taking over the space previously occupied by Hudson’s Bay. Walmart Canada has announced plans to open a two-level Supercentre at Place d’Orleans, becoming the anchor tenant at the mall. “The two-level store will include a full grocery offering, general merchandise, pharmacy, and pickup and delivery services,” Walmart said in a media release. “It will also become the mall’s anchor tenant, with expected increases in foot traffic and retail activity in the east-end community.” The new Walmart Supercentre at Place d’Orléans is scheduled to open by 2027. “As we continue to announce new stores as part of our $6.5 billion investment in Canada announced last year, we’re proud to introduce this new two-level Supercentre in Ottawa’s Place d’Orléans mall,” Shawn Fujiki, senior director of real estate at Walmart Canada, said in a statement. “Through this new Supercentre, we’re providing Ottawa residents with even more access to our everyday low prices.” According to the owner of Place d’ Orléans, the store will occupy 115,500 sq. ft. of space at the mall. “The opening of Walmart at Place d’Orléans represents a significant milestone for the centre,” said Patrick Sullivan, president and chief operating officer of Primaris REIT. “At 115,500 square feet, Walmart brings a compelling, high-quality retail offering that meaningfully enhances the property’s merchandising mix. Walmart is a proven traffic driver, and we expect its presence to materially increase footfall and create incremental opportunities for our existing retailers, while also supporting continued tenant demand and future merchandising enhancements across the centre.” Hudson’s Bay closed all stores last year, including the store at Place d’Orléans, as part of a restructuring process. In April, it was reported a deal was in the works to sell the former Bay location on Rideau Street to a company linked to Claridge Homes.
