Temporary brush drop-off site opens to assist with ice storm clean-up

Residents dealing with the aftermath of the recent ice storm now have a new option to dispose of debris. The County of Simcoe and Town of Innisfil teamed up to open a temporary site for residents and county contractors to drop-off brush and tree debris free of charge.

The site, located at 675 Big Bay Point Road, opens Wednesday and will operate Monday to Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It will remain operational for at least two weeks, though officials say that could be extended depending on need.

Only brush and tree debris will be accepted at the new site. Other types of waste must still be taken to regular County waste facilities. The County is waiving drop-off fees for brush until the end of May for both residents and contractors, but those using the service must show proof of a Simcoe County address. Contractors may also be asked to confirm that materials being dropped off came from within in the County.

“We know the clean up from the ice storm has been challenging for those impacted, and Town of Innisfil staff continue with their efforts,” said Innisfil Mayor Lynn Dollin. “We are pleased to offer a way for residents to dispose of brush in partnership with the County of Simcoe to assist with storm debris you may have on your property.”

In addition to the new location, the County has extended hours at most of its existing waste facilities, and opened temporary brush drop-off sites in Coldwater and Midhurst.

Curbside collection of brush is also ongoing. The County added more chipping crews to help with larger debris, but delays are expected as workers balance ice storm recovery with regular spring yard waste pick-up.

“After dealing with the initial response to the ice storm, we continue to support recovery efforts including the long-term cleanup of brush and debris,” said County Warden Basil Clarke. “We know that other communities in Simcoe County were hit hard by the storm, and we’re extending our support to help more residents and communities as best we can."

Barrie and Orillia residents, and anyone residing outside the County, need to use their municipality’s local waste disposal services.
