Ramara Township’s roads still closed after Canada Day storm

Scattered debris and downed power lines are still being mended after Canada Day’s storm in Ramara Township.

Ramara workers continue to respond to the impacts of Canada Day’s storm. Crews are actively clearing fallen trees and debris from roadways, while emergency hydro responders continue to address downed power lines across the township.

Ramara’s emergency response:

Ramara Fire & Rescue Services responded to two marine rescues during the storm.

• In the first incident, a group of individuals on inflatable floating devices were blown away from shore during the storm surge and was unable to return safely. Fire crews assisted in bringing everyone back to shore safely.
• In the second marine rescue, firefighters rescued two individuals after their personal watercraft overturned, pulling both occupants from the water.
• Crews also responded to an incident at a provincial park where a tree fell onto a tent occupied by a family of four. The adult male sustained head and leg injuries, and a child sustained a leg injury. Both individuals were transported to hospital.
• The majority of emergency calls received during the storm involved trees on hydro lines, downed and arcing power lines, as well as several carbon monoxide (CO) calls related to power outages and generator use.

The Aftermath

Cooling & Hydration Stations Open

• To support residents affected by power outages and the current extreme heat, the township has opened the following facilities as cooling areas:
• Township Administration building; 2297 Highway 12, Brechin available until 4:30 p.m. Friday
• Ramara Centre; 5482 Highway 12, Atherley, available until 8 p.m. Friday
• Residents are welcome to visit these locations during regular operating hours to cool down and take refuge from the heat.

Roads & Cleanup

Lakeshore Drive remains closed from Simcoe Road to Concession Road 2 due to downed hydro lines. Concession 2 between Lakeshore Drive and Ramara Road 47 has also been closed effective July 2, due to downed hydro lines.

Staff asks residents to please continue to use caution when travelling, as crews may be working in your area. Roads may still have debris, reduced visibility or other storm-related hazards. Slow down, watch for workers and emergency vehicles, and never drive around barricades.

Parks Update

Township staff are assessing parks for storm damage. At this time, roadway hazards remain the priority. Park cleanup is anticipated to begin early next week once urgent public safety concerns have been addressed.

Generator Safety

• With ongoing power outages, please use generators safely:
• Never operate a generator inside your home, garage, shed or any enclosed space.
• Keep generators outdoors and well away from windows, doors and vents.
• Ensure your home has working carbon monoxide (CO) alarms.
• If your CO alarm sounds, or anyone experiences symptoms such as headache, dizziness or nausea, move to fresh air immediately and call 911.
• Ramara Fire & Rescue Services has responded to several carbon monoxide-related calls since the storm. Please use generators safely to protect yourself and your family.

Power Line Safety

Stay at least 10 metres away from any downed power line. Always assume a fallen power line is energized and dangerous. Report downed power lines to Hydro One at 1-800-434-1235.
