Prince Edward Island is launching a new action plan to support seniors with stronger services. The 2026-2031 seniors action plan focuses on collaborations across sectors, enhancing well-being and healthy aging, and promoting positive perceptions of aging, according to a news release from the provincial government. “Older adults have built the foundations we rely on today,” said Peter Holman, seniors’ secretariat chair, in the release. “They deserve respect, support, and opportunities to age with dignity, connection and purpose. “By releasing this action plan, and continuing to invest in older adults, we are strengthening not only their well-being, but the health and resilience of our entire community.” The previous five-year seniors action plan ran from 2018 to 2023. Since then the province says it has increased financial supports through the Seniors Independence Initiative, built more affordable housing for seniors and increased the number of long-term care beds. “While there are numerous investments that have been made since 2023, there is always room for improvement,” the new plan reads. “The 2026-2031 Seniors Action Plan builds upon past successes, while implementing new strategies that integrate the current and future needs that PEI’s older adult population have expressed as being important to their overall well-being.” According to the action plan, nearly 21 per cent of P.E.I.’s residents are seniors. Most seniors on the Island are between the ages of 65 and 74. For more P.E.I. news, visit our dedicated provincial page.
