A giant maple leaf flag will fly on the side of Ottawa City Hall starting Monday to promote Canadian unity after the latest round of proposed tariffs from the United States. “Over the past 18 months, we’ve witnessed an extraordinary increase in Canadian pride,” said Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe in a social media post. “Given the punitive new tariffs recently imposed on many businesses in Ottawa and throughout Canada, I think it’s more important than ever that we show our city and our country are strong and united.” The giant flag is normally only displayed on City Hall overlooking Marion Dewar Plaza on Canada Day. “Let’s continue to proudly display our maple leaf and work together to build a stronger, more resilient, more independent economy,” Sutcliffe said. U.S. President Donald Trump announced last week a new 50 per cent tariff on some Canadian goods, including wine, hockey sticks and cement, for what his administration is characterizing as discriminatory trade policies.
