Waterloo Regional Police are investigating after a man was shot in Waterloo early Sunday. Police said officers responded to reports of a shooting on Marshall Street at about 12:15 a.m. Officers located a 31-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. “Obviously, any sort of shooting incident is concerning, no matter where it is located,” said Const. Brad Hickey. “That’s why we’re really appealing to members of the public. Anyone who heard anything, saw anything, anyone who has information, we’re really encouraging them to come forward.” Investigators believe the people involved were known to one another, but did not provide further details about the nature of the relationship. “There are no suspect descriptions or vehicles involved at this time. All of that will be part of the ongoing investigation,” Hickey explained. Nearby resident, Raymond Hoff, said he woke up to flashing lights and a large police presence outside his home. “We saw police officers running by with assault rifles. It was just all the excitement of the police and the police telling us, ‘Get back inside, get back inside.’ It was just a scene of chaos out here,” Hoff told CTV News. Despite the heavy police presence, Hoff said he did not hear any gunshots overnight. “We had no clue what happened. And I mean, there was a shooting that occurred,” he stated. Hoff described the area as generally quiet, making the incident unexpected for nearby residents. “There’s a couple of houses up here... they’re student houses, they get a little rowdy at times,” Hoff noted. “But it’s just parties and whatnot. And other than that, it’s been very, very quiet.” Sunday’s incident marks the eighth shooting reported in Waterloo Region so far this year. Police said five of those shootings, including the latest incident in Waterloo, involved reported injuries, while three resulted in no reported injuries. Police said the investigation is being led by the General Investigations Unit and that there will be an increased police presence in the area as officers canvass for witnesses and gather additional information. Police are asking anyone who may have video footage from the area to contact them. “Police did receive the call at approximately 12:15 a.m. So we’ll be looking for any video footage from anyone who was in the area prior to that, and up until 12:15, and shortly thereafter,” Hickey said.
