N.B. man charged for allegedly stealing $16K worth of copper wires: RCMP

A 38-year-old man from Seeley’s Cove, N.B., has been charged in relation to a copper wire theft investigation in the area.

RCMP received a report of a copper wire theft at a telecommunications tower on Seeley’s Cove Road on Tuesday. Police say the tower had been targeted several times recently.

A member of the Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems unit used a drone to capture photos and video from above the area.

“During the search, the member located a large quantity of copper wire near a recreational vehicle,” reads a news release from RCMP on Friday.

RCMP attended the scene and arrested Cody Babineau, who was also on house arrest.

They also executed a search warrant at a residence in connection with the investigation. Police say they located and seized roughly 1,000 metres of copper wire, estimated to be valued at more than $16,000.

Babineau appeared in Saint John provincial court on Wednesday and was charged with theft over $5,000 and possession of stolen property.

He was released from custody pending a future court appearance.
