Two Stony Plain residents were killed in a crash on Thursday. Their Jeep collided with a pickup truck at the intersection of Highways 627 and 60 around 3:30 p.m. The pair, a 69-year-old man and 64-year-old woman, died at the scene. The pickup’s driver and lone occupant was hospitalized with serious injuries. The cause of the collision is under investigation. The area was closed while RCMP were on scene. Local podcaster Chris Scheetz lives near the crash site. Five weeks ago he discussed the dangers of the intersection on his podcast. He says when there’s congestion, making a left turn from Highway 60 to Highway 627 can be dangerous. He says there’s a simple solution. “We have left hand signals all across the city, all over highways. I don’t know why this one’s been left out,” he told CTV News Edmonton on Friday. I’ve said, half kidding half not, that I want to start a GoFundMe page, whatever this thing costs to get that extra light put there." A spokesperson for Alberta’s ministry of transportation says the intersection was reviewed by an engineering consultant in 2019 and signal timing changes were made to improve safety and efficiency. “Improvements for the intersection are included in the current Provincial Construction Program, and the department has retained an engineering consultant to complete the design of intersection improvements, which may include further traffic signal improvements and geometric upgrades to improve the operations of the intersection,” Husam Khalo wrote. “Funding for construction of these intersection improvements will be evaluated as part of our annual capital planning process.” With files from CTV News Edmonton’s Noah Rishaug
