Fredericton plans to replace wading pools built in ‘70s with splashpads

The City of Fredericton is developing a long-term plan to replace nine wading pools with splashpads.

The pools were installed in the 1970s, and after 50 years the city says they’re approaching the “end of life.”

The city engaged an independent engineering consultant to assess the conditions of the pools. As a result of the report, the Islandview wading pool in Silverwood, N.B., was closed, “due to extensive structural issues.”

Six pools are expected to be operational for another five to 10 years as the city transitions to splashpads. Those wading pools are located on:

• Massey Street
• Woodbridge Street
• Limerick Road
• Piercy Crescent
• Kent Street
• Longwood Drive

Two wading pools were found to be in good condition and expected to be operational for 10 to 15 years, located on:

• Carman Avenue
• Union Street

“Developing a long-term strategy allows the city to thoughtfully transition aging infrastructure into modern splash pads,” says Fredericton Coun. Kelly Murray in a news release on Friday.

“This approach will provide families with young children a safe and accessible place to cool off in summer, while ensuring responsible investment in facilities that will serve our city far into the future.”
