Two arrested following theft sprees of liquor, sunglasses: Winnipeg police

Winnipeg police have arrested two suspects in separate theft sprees involving liquor and designer sunglasses.

According to police, officers started investigating several thefts at Liquor Marts across the city between September and October. The thefts took place in stores on Main Street, Leila Avenue, River Avenue, Pembina Highway and Marion Street, and resulted in a $2,300 financial loss for the stores.

Police allege in all the thefts, a woman used a stolen driver’s licence as identification to enter the stores. A suspect was identified and a warrant was issued for her arrest.

A 33-year-old woman turned herself in to police on Friday and was detained in custody. She was charged with eight counts of theft under $5,000, identity fraud, and identity theft.

The theft of designer sunglasses took place earlier this month, and involved 40 pairs of sunglasses being stolen from a store in the 1400 block of Portage Avenue. Police said the thefts amounted to a loss of over $19,000.

A 28-year-old man was arrested at a home in the 600 block of Toronto Street by the Manitoba Integrated Violent Offender Apprehension Unit, who were investigating an unrelated incident.

He has been charged with one count of theft over $5,000 and four counts of theft under $5,000 and was detained in custody.

The charges against both suspects have not been proven in court.
