A new report is shedding light on the rates of physical and sexual violence in Manitoba

New numbers out of Statistics Canada are shedding light on the prevalence of physical and sexual assault in Manitoba and the rest of the country.

According to a report released on Tuesday, 7.1 per cent of Manitobans aged 15 years or older were victims of physical or sexual violence in the 12-month period before the survey was conducted from October 2024 to July 2025.

When broken down by gender, the prevalence of victimization was more common in men, with 7.7 per cent of men reporting they were victims of assault as opposed to 6.5 per cent of women.

In terms of types of assault, the report shows physical assault was more commonly reported in Manitoba.

According to Statistics Canada, 6.6 per cent of Manitobans reported being physically assaulted, though its prevalence was nearly two times higher in men (6.9 per cent) than women (3.7 per cent).

When it comes to sexual assault, 2.9 per cent of Manitobans reported victimization, including 3.8 per cent of women and 1.9 per cent of men.

When compared to the country as a whole, Manitoba’s rates were on the higher end.

The report shows that just over two million people living in Canada (5.8 per cent) aged 15 and older were victims of physical and sexual assault.

The data in this report was collected from the Government of Canada’s Survey of Safety in Public and Private Spaces. The survey was conducted from October 2024 to July 2025 with 145,000 people polled across the country. Statistics Canada accounts for the uncertainty of the estimates with a 95 per cent confidence interval.
