A Manitoba man has been sentenced after he was busted for smuggling “ninja stars” and other prohibited weapons into the country. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) said 47-year-old Mark Sobry was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty to two charges—smuggling prohibited weapons into Canada and importing prohibited weapons. The charges stem from an incident back in the summer of 2024. CBSA officers at the Vancouver and Mississauga international mail centres intercepted two shipments containing prohibited stun guns. This led officers, along with RCMP, to search Sobry’s home in Kelwood, Man. There, officers seized seven prohibited shuriken throwing knives, which the CBSA said are also known as “ninja stars.” An image provided by the CBSA shows the throwing knives were shaped like playing cards. Along with the knives, officers seized a stun gun and 10 non-restricted long rifles with ammunition and reloading supplies. The CBSA said at the time, Sobry had a court-imposed condition that he could not have any prohibited weapons. The CBSA said Sobry pleaded guilty to the charges in October in Minnedosa Provincial Court and, as of Wednesday, was handed a 20-month conditional sentence along with a 10-year weapons prohibition. He was also ordered to provide a DNA sample.
