Manitoba weather: Possible heat wave on the way

A sunny and warm Thursday sets the stage for a similarly lovely week ahead in Manitoba.

Much of the province is forecast for clear skies with temperatures peaking in the high teens to low 20s.

Easterly winds blowing at 20 km/h will persist through most regions.

Meanwhile, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued an air quality statement for a large swath of the southeast due to ongoing wildfires.

Areas like Lac du Bonnet, Nopiming Provincial Park, Falcon Lake, West Hawk Lake, Selkirk, and Gimli could contend with poor air quality Thursday as smoke from the Nopiming Provincial Park wildfire spreads downwind.

Winds aren’t likely to shift too dramatically over the next 24 hours, so smoky conditions could take until the weekend to dissipate.

Skies remain relatively clear overnight with temperatures hovering a few degrees above freezing in most areas. However, south-central portions of Manitoba, including Winnipeg, run the risk of frost overnight thanks to a forecast low of 3 C.

Similar conditions unfold Friday across Manitoba with sunny skies, temperatures in the low 20s and easterly winds.

Although highs across the province aren’t expected to deviate dramatically for the remainder of the week, the mercury is set to soar into the next.

Most areas could be grazing the 30 C mark by Wednesday, though it is still a bit early to determine just how hot it could get. A few meteorological variables, like a drier air mass expected to spread over the Prairies, could alter the current forecast.
