Electric vehicle charging network between Thompson and Winnipeg revealed

Manitoba Hydro has revealed locations for electric vehicle charging stations on Highway 6 that will be operating in 2027.

Manitoba Hydro has revealed where charging stations for electric vehicles will be located between Winnipeg and Thompson.

The Crown corporation said six stations will be installed along Highway 6 in Manitoba to help close gaps in the current vehicle charging network.

A release from Manitoba Hydro said the province already has hundreds of charging stations for electric vehicles, but most are limited to southern Manitoba and major highways.

The new chargers will be built in Lundar, St. Martin (Pinaymootang First Nation), Grand Rapids (Misipawistik Cree Nation), Ponton (Pimicikamak Cree Nation), Wabowden (Pimicikamak Cree Nation), and in Thompson (Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation). Manitoba Hydro said its intention is to partner with First Nations on the projects.

Manitoba Hydro says five of the sites will be Level 3 chargers, which are capable of fully charging four vehicles in 20 to 30 minutes.

The exact locations of the charging stations have not been released.

The system will be owned by Manitoba Hydro, but a third-party provider will install and operate the stations.

Manitoba Hydro said the first phase of the charging network will be fully operation in the spring of 2027.
