Serge Audette, the 72-year-old Quebec man convicted of manslaughter in a Montreal cold case from 1996, is appealing the verdict. Audette was found guilty on May 25 in the death of 25-year-old Patricia Ferguson in Montreal’s Pointe-aux-Trembles neighbourhood. Noovo Info confirmed that he is appealing the conviction and is scheduled to appear at the Montreal courthouse on July 21 by videoconference. His sentencing hearing was due to take place on Oct. 9. The Crown is seeking the maximum sentence for manslaughter, which is life imprisonment. In 2022, Montreal police reopened the cold case following information gathered from a private investigator and Noovo Info journalist Marie-Christine Bergeron into Ferguson, a mother of one. Their findings were featured in a documentary called “L’appartement 5″ on Crave. After the documentary aired, Montreal police sent a team back to Pointe-aux-Trembles to look for clues. Audette was arrested the following year. Despite the major break in the case, Ferguson’s body has still never been found.
