Central Saanich cougar sighting prompts police warning

Police in Central Saanich, B.C., are warning the public after a cougar was spotted lounging in a tree in the area.

Police in Central Saanich, B.C., are warning the public to remain vigilant after sightings of a cougar in the Vancouver Island community.

Police received reports of a cougar perched in a tree in the 9600 block of Epco Drive shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday, the Sidney/North Saanich RCMP said in a statement Wednesday. By the time police arrived, the big cat had descended the tree and fled the area in an unknown direction.

“There was no indication that the cat was stalking any people or pets, but everyone in the area should be aware when outside with small children or animals,” said Staff Sgt. Kris Clark.

“If spotted, please leave it alone and give it space. There is no need to report its whereabouts unless it’s posing an active threat to someone.”

The B.C. Conservation Officer Service has been made aware of the cougar’s presence.
