Qatar’s Madibo given five-match ban for Kone tackle

While Team Canada hits the field for warmups, Ismael Kone could be seen in a wheelchair saluting the fans.

Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo has been suspended for five matches for the tackle that broke the leg of Canada’s Ismael Kone last week at the FIFA World Cup.

Canada would go on to win the match 6-0 with Madibo sent off for the offence in the 54th minute.

The ​FIFA Disciplinary Committee says the ban is for “serious foul play.” Madibo can appeal the suspension through the FIFA Appeal Committee.

In the days since Kone underwent surgery for the injury, he was visited in the hospital by Madibo.

“This visit reflects the spirit of sportsmanship ‌and ⁠the strong relationships on and off the field," the Qatar Football Federation said in a statement. “We wish the player a speedy recovery and a quick return to ​the pitch."

A native of Khartoum, the 29-year-old Madibo has been capped 53 times by Qatar.

Qatar finishes their group stage campaign later on Wednesday against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The team can still qualify for the knockout round with a victory.
