Public advisory issued after woman bitten by bat in Martensville, Sask.

The City of Martensville, Sask., has issued a public advisory after a bat bit a woman multiple times.

According to the city, the woman was bitten on the neck and has received the rabies vaccination.

Residents are asked to avoid contact with bats, keep pets and children safe, and seek immediate medical attention if bitten or scratched by a bat.

This advisory follows a similar warning issued earlier this week by the City of Warman, where a bat infected with rabies was discovered in the city.

Andy Szachlewicz, Warman’s communications liaison and executive assistant, said the case was confirmed after a dead bat was found in a backyard.

Rabies is a deadly virus that can be transmitted through bites or even minor contact with infected animals.

According to Public Health Agency of Canada, human infection can be deadly if not treated before symptoms begin.

The health agency says rabies symptoms usually take about three to eight weeks to develop. Once symptoms appear, death can occur within seven to 14 days.

Early rabies symptoms can include fever, tiredness, headaches and anxiety or irritability, according to the federal health agency.

Anyone who comes into contact with a bat should seek medical attention immediately.
