Flames acquire Wild defenceman Middleton in deal that ships 2-time Cup winner Coleman to Minnesota

The Calgary Flames acquired Jacob Middleton from the Minnesota Wild Thursday.

The Calgary Flames traded forward Blake Coleman and defenceman Ollie Maatta to the Minnesota Wild Thursday for defenceman Jacob Middleton and three draft picks.

The Flames get a 2029 second-round draft pick, a 2027 third-rounder and a 2028 fourth-rounderfrom the Wild, while retaining half of Coleman’s $4.9 million contract for the coming season. The 35-year-old is due to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Middleton, 30, who’s from Wainwright, Alta., has played nine NHL seasons in San Jose and Minnesota.

Last year, he played 75 regular season and 11 playoff games, scoring twice and adding 14 assists, while picking up 76 penalty minutes.

Middleton was also part of Team Canada’s gold medal-winning squad in the 2023 IHF World Championship.

Coleman, a two-time Stanley Cup winner with the Tampa Bay Lightning, scored 20 goals and added 15 assists for 35 points in 69 games with the Flames last season.

Maatta played 43 games in 2025-26 for the Utah Mammoth and the Flames, picking up 3 goals and adding 13 assists for 15 points. Calgary had acquired the 31-year-old from Utah at the NHL trade deadline in March along with prospect Jonathan Castagna and three second-round picks in June’s draft for fellow blueliner MacKenzie Weegar.
