Search and rescue volunteers on central Vancouver Island are now better equipped to respond when emergencies happen after dark. Members of Arrowsmith Search and Rescue and the Alberni Valley Rescue Squad have completed the specialized training and testing needed to carry out nighttime helicopter hoist operations alongside Ascent Helicopters. The new capability allows rescuers to be flown directly into remote or hard-to-reach areas after sunset, helping crews reach injured or stranded people faster in situations where hiking in on foot could take hours. It’s the first time civilian B.C. search and rescue teams on Vancouver Island have achieved the capability, marking a significant step forward for emergency response in the region. “A huge congratulations to our dedicated Hoist Team — their extra training, commitment, and professionalism in this high-risk role make this achievement possible. They step up time and again, driven by their deep care for our community,” Arrowsmith Search and Rescue said in a statement. Rescue leaders say the training is expected to improve access to patients in difficult terrain while making complex evacuations safer for both volunteers and the people they’re helping. The milestone is the result of a partnership between the two volunteer search and rescue organizations and Ascent Helicopters in Parksville. Teams say they’ll continue training to keep the specialized skill sharp and ready for future callouts.
