Two dead after failed traffic stop leads to crash on Sask. highway, police say

Saskatchewan RCMP is investigating a fatal two‑vehicle collision that occurred after a truck reportedly fled from an Estevan police traffic stop on Highway 39.

RCMP say the crash happened on March 27 around 7:15 p.m., about 16 kilometres southeast of Weyburn.

An Estevan Police Service officer with Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan was conducting patrols when they saw a truck speeding and attempted a traffic stop.

According to RCMP, the truck did not stop and continued travelling at a high rate of speed.

Shortly after, police observed the truck collide with a car on the highway.

Estevan police responded and provided first aid until paramedics arrived. The driver and passenger in the car, a 46‑year‑old man from Estevan and a 40‑year‑old woman from Lampman, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their families have been notified.

The truck’s driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, was taken to a local hospital and later transported by STARS with serious injuries.

As required under The Police Act, Saskatchewan RCMP notified the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) about the Estevan officer’s interaction with the driver of the truck before the crash.

SIRT directed RCMP’s Serious Crimes Unit to investigate the incident under its oversight. The investigation will include confirming the exact sequence of events that led to the fatal crash.

The RCMP Serious Crimes Unit, a collision reconstructionist and the Office of the Chief Coroner are continuing an investigation.
