What’s playing this weekend: May 22-24

We're checking out the new movies hitting theatres this week with Matt Demers, Mr. Hollywood!

A new weekend means a whole new batch of movies playing in theatres. If you’re wondering what to check out on the big screen, film reviewer Matt Demers, A.K.A. Mr. Hollywood, has you covered.

Demers joined CTV’s Your Morning Ottawa on Friday to chat about three new films playing this weekend.

Stars Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu (Rated PG-13)

Mr. Hollywood says this new entry into the Star Wars universe — the first since 2019 — offers plenty of entertainment.

“Here’s the thing: this is a fun time,” he said.

The film should land for both fans of the TV show “The Mandalorian” and those who have never seen an episode.

“You can go right into this movie. But the way it plays out — action, adventure — and it is just like the show.”

“Stars Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu” stars Pedro Pascal, Jeremy Allen White and Sigourney Weaver. The film was directed by Jon Favreau.

Passenger (Rated R)

This frightening flick might hit too close to home for those planning to travel by car this summer, Mr. Hollywood says.

“If you are going on a road trip anytime soon, maybe skip this one because it’s going to make you paranoid,” he said.

“It’s about things that happen on the road. I’m going to tiptoe around spoilers but just know that there’s an entity called the passenger who is out. Once you’re marked by the passenger, don’t drive at night, don’t stop because he will get you.”

The film was directed by André Øvredal and stars Jacob Scipio, Lou Llobell and Melissa Leo.

I Love Boosters (Rated R)

Mr. Hollywood says “I Love Boosters” is a colourful and stylish film driven by a “fantastic” cast.

“The style is almost a bonus character and it’s a really fun movie,” he said.

“You got to watch it to believe it, because the dialogue here is so great. It’s so original, and I watch so many movies, I love when I get something different.”

The film is written and directed by Boots Riley. “I Love Boosters” stars Keke Palmer, LaKeith Stanfield and Demi Moore.
