2 people charged in fatal stabbing at Ottawa apartment building

A man and a woman are facing second-degree murder charges for the death of a 37-year-old man. CTV’s Natalie van Rooy reports.

Two people are facing a charge of second-degree murder in connection to a fatal stabbing at an apartment building in Ottawa’s Carlington neighbourhood, near the Central Experimental Farm.

The Ottawa Police Service says 37-year-old Andrew Dawson-Swan died after being stabbed in a building in the 1200 block of Shillington Avenue at approximately 12:30 a.m. Friday.

“A lot of screaming and hollering. I just remember some guy being pulled out on a stretcher,” a resident told CTV News Ottawa.

“Then I found out this morning that there was a person who got stabbed and then I found out that person passed away.”

Sabrina Danis-Charlebois, 32, and Cody Maltby, 30, have been charged with second-degree murder, police said.

Officers were seen coming out of an apartment building at 1216 Shillington Avenue Friday morning.

An Ottawa Paramedic Services spokesperson said paramedics treated a man for stab wounds, and he was transported to the hospital in critical condition. The man died from his injuries in hospital.

Ray Dagg said he saw flashing lights and a dozen police vehicles on the street.

“My bedroom is at the back of the house. I don’t hear much of anything,” Dagg said, adding he had lived across the street from the apartment building since 1978.

“I heard this bang and it sounded like them closing the doors.”

Police could not say whether the victim lived in the building.

“That will be part of this investigation if the individual lived there, was visiting, or what the circumstances were as to why they were there,” Const. Fern John-Simon said.

This is Ottawa’s second homicide of 2026.

Police say there is no connection between this homicide and last week’s homicide in the same neighbourhood.
