The hate crime unit at the Montreal police (SPVM) is investigating a series of incidents allegedly targeting Hasidic Jews in Outremont on July 3. According to the Jewish Hasidic Council of Quebec (CJHQ), the incidents took place at night during Shabbat, as members of the community were leaving synagogues. “It was basically a spree,” said Sam Muller, the executive director of CJHQ. “A young group of people circling around the neighbourhood harassing, intimidating, spitting, yelling slurs.” The CJHQ posted surveillance footage of several of the incidents to its Facebook page. Some of the videos show people grabbing the shtreimels, the traditional fur hats worn by Hasidic Jewish men. “It’s a shame that in 2026, we still have such incidents in a neighbourhood like Montreal,” said Muller. Outremont Mayor Caroline Braun called the situation worrisome. “What we’re aware of at this stage is that 10 people were attacked Friday night during Shabbat,” said Braun. “Eight of the 10 events happened in Outremont.” Montreal police confirmed its hate crime unit is investigating but did not provide further details. It did say, however, that the incidents occurred in areas covered by two different police stations, 26 and 38. Police say they would provide “targeted special attention” to the neighbourhood, particularly during Sabbath. Muller says he is in contact with the victims and is encouraging those affected to file police reports. “I’d like for people to know that incidents like these are unacceptable.”
