Alberta’s police watchdog has released more details about an incident near Irricana earlier this month that resulted in RCMP shooting a suspect. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) says Mounties were called to a rural home near the town just before 6:30 p.m. on July 3. ASIRT says the call was made by a woman who “reported a domestic disturbance” involving her boyfriend. According to ASIRT, the two responding officers heard yelling from inside the home before a woman came out the front door. ASIRT says the officers stayed outside and called for the man to come out, but he did not respond. “A few minutes later, he came to the front door and began walking toward police while holding what appeared to be a handgun,” ASIRT said in a Friday news release. “During the interaction that followed, one officer fired his service pistol multiple times, striking the man.” ASIRT did not indicate if the item the man was holding was later confirmed to be a gun. The officers provided first aid until paramedics arrived, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. ASIRT says the incident was captured on both officers’ body-worn cameras. “The information in this release reflects what investigators know at this early stage, and what they can share while maintaining the integrity of the investigation,” ASIRT said. “The investigation remains ongoing, and no further information is available for release at this time.” The town of Irricana is located approximately 40 kilometres northeast of Calgary.
