Suspended driver hits 159 km/h on Hwy. 17 with 4 kids in car: OPP

A 47-year-old driver faces multiple charges, including stunt driving, after being stopped by Ontario Provincial Police while travelling nearly double the posted speed limit with children in the vehicle this week.

Police say they stopped a vehicle at 1:45 p.m. on Monday on Highway 17 in West Nipissing after it was recorded travelling 159 km/h in a 90 km/h zone.

“The driver was found to be a suspended driver and had four children in the vehicle,” said police in a news release Wednesday.

The driver from St. Charles, Ont., was charged with stunt driving, driving while under suspension and driving a motor vehicle with no currently validated permit.

Additionally, under provincial law, the accused received an immediate 30-day driver’s licence suspension and the vehicle was impounded for 45 days.

The accused was issued three provincial offence summonses and is scheduled to appear in court in West Nipissing on Jan. 8.

“There were no health or safety concerns for the children,” OPP Const. Rob Lewis said in an email to CTV News on Thursday.
