A new banner hangs in the rafters of the Sudbury Community Arena and the team below it showed on Monday night that their championship form has carried over.

In their first game since capturing the Basketball Super League title, the Sudbury Five opened the new season with a statement performance, defeating the Lake Erie Jackals 126-114. The victory was a blend of explosive offence and timely defence, serving notice that the quest for a repeat is underway.

The night began with a ceremony, as the franchise raised its championship banner honouring last season’s squad.

The first 1,000 fans also received keepsakes to celebrate last season’s historic run – mini replica championship banners.

That celebratory energy seemed to fuel the players from the opening tipoff, as they immediately set about building a new winning memory.

Fast start sets the tone

Any concern about a ceremonial hangover was erased within minutes. The Five unleashed a devastating 14-0 run to start the game, a barrage of dunks, three-pointers and stifling defence that forced two frantic Lake Erie timeouts before the first quarter was half over.

Keyshawn Bryant was at the heart of the onslaught. He scored seven quick points during the stretch, including a three-pointer, while also contributing a block and a steal.

The early assault established a lead that the Jackals would spend the rest of the evening unsuccessfully trying to surmount.

Star power sustains the lead

While the Jackals, led by a prolific bench effort, consistently fought back to within single digits, the Five’s core of returning stars always had an answer.

Bryant finished with a game-high 32 points, showcasing the athletic, high-flying style that has become his trademark. Alongside him, Duane Notice delivered a poised and powerful performance, scoring 25 points and controlling the glass with a team-high nine rebounds.

The frontcourt duo of Alex Kotov and Charlie Marquardt provided crucial secondary scoring. Kotov was remarkably efficient, scoring 21 points on just 10 shot attempts while pulling down 10 rebounds for a double-double – earning him ‘Greatest Performance of the Game’ honours from the team. Marquardt chipped in 22 points, stretching the floor with five three-pointers.

Jackals bench refused to yield

The Lake Erie Jackals demonstrated why they will be a tough out all season, primarily through the strength of their reserves.

Trenton Temple led the charge off the pine with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Samad Bailey added 19 points, D’Andre Johnson had 18 and Matthew Csuhran contributed 16. This depth allowed the Jackals to weather the early storm and keep the pressure on the champions throughout, closing the halftime gap to 66-57 and threatening repeatedly in the second half.

Championship composure closes the door

Each time the Jackals made a run, the Five’s championship experience surfaced. Critical baskets from Notice or Bryant, a key defensive stop, or a timely three from Marquardt would stem the tide. A decisive factor was Sudbury’s ability to capitalize on mistakes, turning 14 Lake Erie turnovers into 23 points, a 15-point advantage in that category.

The Five also dominated the interior, outscoring Lake Erie 58-38 in the paint and shooting a more efficient 46.7 per cent from the field compared to the Jackals’ 40.4 per cent. This inside-out offensive balance, combined with disciplined play down the stretch, allowed Sudbury to rebuild a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter and secure the win.

Path forward

The victory marks a successful first step for the Sudbury Five (1-0) under new head coach and general manager Joey Puddister, as they begin the arduous task of defending their throne. The seamless performance from the returning core suggests the standards set last season remain firmly in place.

Despite poor weather conditions, a sizable crowd of more than 2,125 attended the home opening win.

As the echoes of the pre-game celebration fade, the focus for the Five shifts squarely to the future. Their next challenge arrives at the Sudbury Arena on Jan. 3, when the Five face off against the Montreal Toundra.

On Monday night, however, they ensured the first chapter of their title defence was written with the same authoritative tone as the story that concluded last season.
