STM strike impacts Montreal’s food distribution efforts

The month-long strike by STM maintenance workers has entered its third day, disrupting bus and metro service outside of peak hours.

The reduced transit schedule is creating challenges for commuters — and for organizations that rely on volunteers.

One of those affected is Moisson Montréal, one of Canada’s largest food distribution centres. The non-profit supplies food to more than 300 organizations across the island and handles about one million food aid requests each month.

“We have at least 100 volunteers working six-hour shifts every day,” said Natalie Clairoux, volunteering specialist at Moisson Montréal.

However, with limited public transit, some volunteers are struggling to make it to their shifts or return home afterwards.

“Some of them have cancelled because it was too complicated to come,” Clairoux explained.

For volunteers like Abdullahi Mikailu, who depend on the metro, the strike has made days longer and more difficult.

“It is frustrating,” he admitted, “but when you think about what you’re doing — helping others — you get over it.”

With the holiday season approaching, Moisson Montréal is busier than ever. The organization aims to prepare 42,000 Christmas food boxes for families in need.

“We hope negotiations start again soon,” said Clairoux.

If no deal is reached, the STM strike is expected to continue until Nov. 28.
