Hackers are using the Hydro-Quebec logo to defraud customers, according to a report by cybersecurity firm Flare. The hackers are likely linked to the Iranian government, according to the report, the contents of which were first revealed by the Journal de Montréal. The fraudsters apparently use email and text to claim that Hydro-Quebec needs to issue a refund for overpayments. The messages then direct recipients to a website where victims are asked to enter personal details and credit card information. As a result, Hydro-Quebec is urging Quebecers to be cautious. This is particularly important, emphasized the Crown corporation’s spokesperson, Louis-Olivier Batty, as the text messages in question appear realistic. Batty pointed out that Hydro-Quebec never issues refunds via text message or email. He says when the Crown corporation refunds a customer, the adjustment is made directly on the electricity bill. Hydro-Quebec is not the only entity whose identity is being impersonated in a fraud campaign targeting Canadians. The image of the British Columbia government has also been used. This report by The Canadian Press was first published in French on March 13, 2026.
