‘Well below seasonal’: Cold weather to continue into the weekend, start of February

Cold weather will continue across the region as a cold warning remains in effect. CTV's Gary Archibald explains.

The cold weather that has blanketed much of the region will continue this weekend and into the start of February.

Cold warnings remain in effect for much of southern Ontario Friday, with brutal wind chill values expected again overnight into Saturday. In London the low will dip down to –20 C, feeling like – 27 with the wind chill, with cloudy skies and a 40 per cent chance of flurries after midnight.

“The ridge of high pressure is keeping things for the most part relatively clear across parts of southern Ontario,” said CTV News Windsor Meteorologist Gary Archibald said. “If you see any cloud over the next six to eight hours, it’s of the non precipitating type.”

Archibald adds that if we do see any precipitation in the next 24 hours it may come off Lake Huron, but it will be minimal. Light flurries are possible across midwestern Ontario this weekend while London could receive a couple centimetres of snow.

“We’re still looking at daytime temperatures several degrees below seasonal,” said Archibald. “Our average high for this time of the year is –2 C.”

Saturday’s daytime high will only reach –10 C, feeling like –27 in the morning and –18 in the afternoon with the wind chill.

The high will reach –7 C on Sunday but will boast plenty of much needed sunshine.

“Temperatures are going to warm up a bit and become more seasonal as we head towards the end of the first week of February,” he said.

Saturday: Mainly cloudy. Wind becoming north 20 km/h near noon. High minus 10. Wind chill minus 27 in the morning and minus 18 in the afternoon. UV index 1 or low.

Sunday: Sunny. High minus 7.

Monday: Cloudy with 40 percent chance of snow. High minus 6.

Tuesday: Cloudy. High minus 5.

Wednesday: A mix of sun and cloud. High minus 7.

Thursday: Cloudy with 30 percent chance of flurries. High minus 6.
