The Waterloo Regional Police Service says they have determined a firearm was not involved in an incident in downtown Kitchener that sparked a large police response. Officers were called to King Street West on Monday around 4 p.m. after gunshots were reported in the area. The street was closed between Ontario Street South and Young Street while they investigated. Shattered glass from a bus shelter was scattered across the sidewalk, and a hole has been left in a window at Pur Cannabis. “It was about 3:45 p.m. – I heard the glass kind of shatter over here. So, I was just doing stuff in the back, I kind of run out to go see what happened. I didn’t really see anything, it looked normal," Nathan Bone, a supervisor at Pur Cannabis, told CTV News. “I checked the cameras and then I see people walking by and hear them react to something over here, so I come back, I’m clued in to over here, I see the little hole there. So then I’m calling my boss back and forth to let him know something went through the glass or whatever and then 10 minutes later the whole bus thing shatters right here in front of me,” Bone said. Initially, police said they were looking into reports that shots had been fired into an unnamed Kitchener business, but in an update at 5:23 p.m., they said a firearm was not involved and damage to the business was not caused by a bullet. In a news release later Monday night, police said, “Further analysis by Forensic Identification Services concluded the damage to the business window was caused by a low-velocity projectile.” “My best guess, honestly, is probably someone with a little slingshot, is what I would think, because the police were saying if it was a bullet, the hole would be bigger, they would have found something in there, we would have heard gunshots, which, I didn’t hear anything. I don’t think anyone heard anything,” Bone said. The road reopened around 6 p.m.
