OPP offer back to school safety reminders

The OPP are offering back to school safety reminders as school is set to begin on Tuesday.

Officers are reminding drivers, parents, and students to prioritize safety on the roads and in school zones.

Driver reminders:

• Slow down and be vigilant while driving in school zones
• Be mindful of children walking or riding bikes to and from school
• When amber lights flash on a school bus, slow down and be prepared to stop
• Drivers must stop for school buses with red flashing lights and when the arm is extended. Passing a stopped school bus is illegal and dangerous

Parents and student reminders:

• Encourage children to avoid distractions while walking
• Take the time to remind them of bus safety: Stay sitting when the bus is moving, wait for the bus to stop before getting on or off, cross the street when it’s safe to do so
• If a child is riding a bike to school, make sure they have a helmet on and they follow the rules of the road
• It is important to look both ways before crossing the street, use the crosswalk, and obey crossing guards

“As students head back to school, safety in our communities is a shared responsibility,” said Supt. Mark Loucas with Essex OPP.

“Drivers must stay alert, patient, and show courtesy around school zones. With increased foot traffic and school buses on the road, let’s work together and make the start of the school year both fun and safe for everyone.”
