Massive grow-op in Stettler shut down, two arrested

Officials with the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) said Thursday that officers had shut down one of the largest illegal marijuana grow-ops found in Alberta, and two suspects had been arrested.

The ALERT Green Team dismantled the grow-op, found at a rural home off of Highway 12 near Stettler, on October 22. Stettler RCMP had responded to the property the night before after reports of a suspicious person came in.

The grow-op was set up in a barn on the property, with an industrial sized generator – it contained a three-stage operation, with 3,284 plants, and about three kilograms of dried bud recently harvested.

In addition, police seized two pick-up trucks equipped with hidden compartments in the slip tanks, it’s believed they were used for smuggling drugs.

ALERT said the grow-op is one of the largest indoor grow-ops ever found by the Gream Team – previously, 2,233 plants were seized from a Parkland County home in December, 2012, the largest outdoor grow-op included 3,854 plants, and was seized in Drumheller in August 2010.

Two people were also arrested in Stettler: Kin Wa Au Yeung, 53, and Dan Wang, 35, are facing charges related to drug trafficking and illegal production – neither held a valid Health Canada grow-op license.
