Here’s what’s on in Edmonton this weekend

Here are some events to bundle up for and check out in Edmonton this cold, cold weekend.

The heat is on for Canada’s national women’s hockey team this weekend, as it is their last shot at winning one out of a four-game series against the U.S. ahead of the Winter Olympics. The final Rivalry Series game will be held Saturday in Rogers Place at 7 p.m. Tickets are still available online.

On Sunday afternoon, the Edmonton Oil Kings are back at Rogers Place to face off against the Brandon Wheat Kings. Tickets for the 4 p.m. game start at $24.

It’s also a weekend of last calls for a few festive events, like the Candy Cane Cabaret and A Kidsmas Carol, both of which are running at the Edmonton Christmas Market in Fort Edmonton Park.

But starting this weekend is Candy Cane Lane in the Crestwood community. The streets are adorned with thousands of twinkling lights and larger-than-life decorations. Sleigh rides and fire pits for a cozy trip around the block are also being offered. Visitors are asked to bring a non-perishable item to donate to the Edmonton Food Bank. Candy Cane Lane officially begins Friday and runs until Jan. 2.

Rutherford House on Saskatchewan Drive is also hosting a traditional Christmas event featuring costumed interpreters, guided historic tours and some old-fashioned treats and cider. A Christmas Past runs from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Adult admission to the house is $7 and visitors are advised to call ahead to make sure there’s room.

Also on Sunday at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium is a live orchestra rendition of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. Tickets to the 3 p.m. concert begin at $64.

If you’re not in the holiday spirit, though, the auditorium is also doing performances of Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets begin at $71.

Of the notable markets this Saturday, the Reuse Centre on 83 Street is bringing back its Waste-less Holiday Market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Each vendor is offering locally-made gifts that include a focus on sustainability and waste reduction. Waste-less Holiday Market is part of a broader city initiative to encourage waste reduction during a season where we might not be thinking too much about how we consume, according to a city release this week. The event will feature a Santa’s Workshop, where kids will be able to make their own little gifts, and a visit from Santa himself at 1:30 p.m.
