A man has been charged in connection with a 2024 south Edmonton homicide that was initially deemed a non-criminal death. Zachary Jerome Legault, 40, was arrested on Friday and charged with first degree murder in the death of 39-year-old Dwight Bennett. On June 20, 2024, Bennett went into medical distress at the Blue Quill Garden Apartments. He died later that day. Information from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner prompted a second autopsy in July 2025 which ultimately ruled Bennett’s death a homicide. Edmonton police say the death was thought to be non-criminal as EMS responded and there was no police involvement at the time. The cause of death was withheld during the investigation. Edmonton police have since revealed that Bennett died from a gunshot wound.
