Central Alberta town pushing to become next Hallmark destination

Sylvan Lake, Alta. has invited Hallmark to shoot a movie in their town.

A town in central Alberta is looking to make a holiday movie moment by becoming the next destination for a Hallmark film.

Sylvan Lake Mayor Megan Hanson came up with the idea following a discussion she had with former councillor Teresa Rilling.

“She’s always dreamed about being an extra in the bakery scene. She’s like the perfect grandma that hands you your cookies,” said Hanson regarding her conversation with the former councillor.

For years, Rilling has championed the town as the perfect backdrop for a Hallmark movie.

Hanson decided to take this idea a step further back in August, by mailing a letter to Hallmark and inviting the film company to shoot a movie in Sylvan Lake.

“There’s a great economic benefit to having a Hallmark movie come to town,” Hanson added. “We’d love to show off how beautiful our community is in the other seasons.”

Although there has been no response as of yet, Hanson plans to send a follow up letter in the new year with a message to Hallmark.

“We would love to roll out the red carpet for you. We have so much to offer. We have tons of options in terms of shooting and we’ve got a great team in our culture department that can assist in everything that’s needed if you were to bring a film in Sylvan Lake. We think it would be a great place for your next film.”
