Manitoba’s worst road has been revealed

CAA Manitoba revealed the results of its 2026 Worst Roads campaign on Thursday, with a south-central highway taking the top spot for the second year in a row.

Following a provincewide voting process, the agency named Provincial Trunk Highway 34 as the province’s worst road, with Provincial Road 307 coming in second and Kenaston/Route 90 taking the third spot.

“Some of the more common things we see [with PTH 34]—potholes being number one, uneven road surfaces, and of course, poor road maintenance,” said Ewald Friesen, CAA Manitoba’s manager of government and community relations.

Other roads that made the list include Winnipeg’s Saskatchewan Avenue in fourth place, Brandon’s Richmond Avenue in fifth and Winnipeg’s Gateway Road in sixth place.

The top 10 was rounded out by Winnipeg’s Leila Avenue, Brandon’s 1st Street, Provincial Road 422 and Winnipeg’s St. Mary’s Road.

Friesen said thousands of people voted in this year’s campaign, with 711 roads receiving nominations.

“Last year we had a heavy rural representation on our list; this year that kind of balanced out,” he said.

“We have equal parts rural, equal parts urban. We also saw a bunch of new roads appear this year, which we’ve never seen before.”

CAA Manitoba launched the 2026 Worst Roads campaign last month, looking for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to nominate roads in desperate need of improvement.

The information collected is then used as part of CAA’s government advocacy on infrastructure and investment.

“When you share these thoughts with us at CAA, we use it in our advocacy and governments respond,” Friesen said.

“A few years ago, 18th Street, which was our number one worst road -- the province responded immediately with a funding commitment, shovels in the ground and I’m happy to report that 18th Street is now a very good road to drive on.”
